Grand Island, NE: Driver Arrested After Confrontation With Students Near Elementary School Dismissal

An after-school confrontation in Grand Island, Nebraska escalated into violence, resulting in the arrest of a 54-year-old man and a citation issued to a juvenile.

According to the Grand Island Police Department, the incident occurred around dismissal time at West Lawn Elementary School. A small group of students from Grand Island Senior High had gathered on College Street across from the elementary school.

Division Chief Dean Elliott reported that while parents were picking up their children, a 54-year-old man drove past the group and voiced support for ICE enforcement.

Authorities say that at some point, one of the students allegedly threw an object at the man’s vehicle.

Police state the driver then stopped his vehicle, exited, and pursued the student believed to have thrown the object. During that confrontation, the man allegedly assaulted the juvenile.

Officials say several other students then became involved and assaulted the 54-year-old man.

Law enforcement responded and arrested the driver on charges that include child abuse. A juvenile was cited for assault. A teacher from West Lawn Elementary reportedly intervened to help break up the altercation before the protest activity continued.

Grand Island Public Schools confirmed that a small group of students had moved to the College Street area around dismissal time. The district has not announced additional disciplinary actions at this time.

The incident remains under investigation.
