Beloved high school coach and wife killed when their SUV crashes into neighbor’s home

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (WPVI) – A New Jersey community is mourning a beloved high school coach and his wife who were killed when their SUV crashed into their neighbor’s home.

Harrison Township Police say 72-year-old Thomas Hengel and his wife, 61-year-old Lisa Hengel, were killed just after 6 p.m. Saturday when their Hyundai SUV suddenly accelerated and crashed directly into their neighbor’s home.

The impact sparked a fire that quickly engulfed the vehicle and spread through much of the house. Investigators say no one inside the home was injured, but the fire left the residence unlivable.

“The flames were up by the roof. They were up high,” DeVine said.

Police say there is no indication of foul play, referring to the crash as “a tragic accident.”

As investigators work to understand what went wrong, tributes are pouring in for Thomas Hengel, who taught at Clearview High School for more than 40 years. He also coached cross country and track, earning numerous honors, including Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2022.

The school released a statement remembering Hengel’s lasting influence:

“As an educator and coach, Tom impacted generations of students, teaching far more than academics or athletics. He taught perseverance, mental toughness, personal accountability, and the importance of character.”

The school community lowered its flag to half-staff, a visible symbol of grief as students, staff and neighbors struggle to process the sudden loss.

The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office is now handling the crash investigation.
