Melania Trump Faces Online Mockery After Struggling to Read Christmas Book at Children’s Hospital

Continuing a Cherished Tradition

Melania Trump continued the long-standing tradition of First Ladies visiting children’s hospitals during the holiday season. On December 5th, she visited Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC, where she read a Christmas story to young patients.

The tradition began with Bess Truman, who served as First Lady from 1945 to 1953. Its purpose is simple: to bring joy and comfort to children undergoing treatment during the festive period. Melania carried on this legacy by spending quality time with the children and offering them early Christmas cheer.

A Festive Visit Full of Joy

The hospital highlighted her arrival on its website. “Melania was escorted by two incredible patients, Faith and Riley, whose bubbly personalities added even more festive spirit,” the hospital wrote.

Michelle Riley-Brown, president & CEO of Children’s National, praised the visit. “We are grateful to the First Lady for sharing her time, compassion, and holiday spirit with our patients and families. Her visit brings moments of joy, comfort, and hope to families who are spending this holiday away from home.”

During the visit, Melania sat in a large red chair in front of a Christmas tree and read How Does Santa Go Down the Chimney? by Mac Barnett to about two dozen children. She also brought toys and wished the children strength, love, and a very merry Christmas.

Online Criticism Emerges

Despite the warm intentions, social media quickly criticized Melania. Some claimed she showed little emotion and struggled with English pronunciation.

“Can Santa see in the dark? Does he wear night vision that make everything green?” Melania read aloud, prompting comments from users highlighting her reading difficulties. Many noted the irony given the Trump administration’s strict immigration policies.Critics on X wrote:

  • “She can’t even read properly or speak English clearly! There’s no engagement with the children…Completely devoid of emotion. The kids deserve better.”
  • “So… Melania Trump struggles with reading out loud. WTF did you MAGAs do??? lol.”
  • “From the most anti-immigrant administration ever. The irony is f—— insane.”
  • “I heard Melania Trump reading a Christmas story to children. If she was on the street talking, ICE would be detaining her.”

Others joked about the children’s experience, with one adding, “Poor kids. They’ll never think of Christmas the same again.”

Ending on a Positive Note

Melania concluded her reading by wishing the children strength and love. She reassured them, “I’m sure Santa will visit all of you this Christmas and bring you lots of toys. I wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.” She also shared that President Donald Trump sends his love and best wishes.

The visit highlighted the First Lady’s commitment to children’s welfare and the enduring tradition of spreading holiday cheer.
